The Netherlands is one of a small handful of countries on earth where Amazon is not the dominant marketplace — and it is not even close.
Bol.com is. Launched in 1999 as a small online bookstore selling 140,000 Dutch titles, now owned by Ahold Delhaize, Bol has grown into the undisputed centre of Dutch and Belgian ecommerce: over 13 million active customers, 33 million-plus products, more than €5 billion in gross merchandise value, and third-party sellers now accounting for over half of all platform sales. Amazon.nl arrived and, for the most part, has not dislodged it. Dutch consumers do not "Google it" — they Bol it.
That single fact should reframe your entire Dutch strategy. And there is a second fact that matters even more if you are reading this from outside the Netherlands: Bol has only recently opened its platform to international sellers — and competition from international brands is still relatively limited.
That is an early-mover window, and those do not stay open. A brand that gets admitted now, with strong imagery and a compliant catalogue, is building position in a mature, high-spending, fast-delivery market before the rest of the world arrives.
This guide covers the real 2026 landscape: Bol.com's admission criteria and its first-party image rules (including the sfeerbeeld exception most sellers miss), Zalando NL, Wehkamp, Otrium, Amazon.nl, Vinted, Marktplaats and de Bijenkorf — plus the Dutch-language requirements that are genuinely non-negotiable, and how AI model photography and short video ads help you clear the bar without a studio in Amsterdam.
FEATURED SNIPPET
How do you sell fashion online in the Netherlands?
The dominant platform is Bol.com, the largest marketplace in both the Netherlands and Belgium, with over 13 million active customers — notably outperforming Amazon on its home turf. A Bol seller account is free with no monthly fee; you pay commission per sale. To register you generally need a Dutch KVK (Chamber of Commerce) or Belgian business registration, a Dutch or Belgian IBAN, a BTW (VAT) number, and a valid EAN/GTIN barcode for every product. Non-EU businesses must establish a local NL/BE entity or use a fiscal representative — Bol does not accept non-EU sole traders. Bol has recently opened to international brands, with admission criteria including integration via a certified API partner (such as Channable or ChannelEngine), proven international marketplace experience, and the ability to offer Dutch-language customer service. Bol's image rules require a white, neutral background with no visible shadows, the product filling at least 80% of the frame, a minimum of 500 × 500 px (at least 1,200 × 1,200 px for zoom), files between 30 KB and 10 MB, and a recommended 1:1 square ratio — with an important exception for sfeerbeelden (atmosphere/lifestyle images), where models and settings are permitted. Bol also accepts video at a minimum 720p. Other key channels include Zalando NL, Wehkamp, Otrium, Amazon.nl, Vinted and Marktplaats. Because on-model and lifestyle imagery drives conversion, AI model photography tools like Studiofy — generating photorealistic on-model images and 4, 6 and 8-second video ads from a single product photo — help Dutch sellers fill those slots without a shoot.
Two countries, one platform — Bol serves the Netherlands and Belgium. A single onboarding gives you access to both markets — one of the most efficient market-entry ratios in Europe
Amazon does not own this market — This is genuinely unusual and strategically important. Dutch consumers start their product search on Bol. If you build your Dutch strategy around Amazon.nl, you are optimising for the wrong platform
A mature, high-spending, digitally native market — The Netherlands and Belgium are among Europe's fastest-growing and most developed ecommerce markets, with high internet penetration and comfortable, habitual online spending
The international window is open — for now — Bol has recently opened to international sellers and applies clear admission criteria. Competition from international brands is still relatively limited, which creates a real opportunity to build market share early
No monthly fee — Unlike Zalando, La Redoute (~€49/month) or Cdiscount (~€39.99/month), a Bol seller account is free. You pay commission only when you sell. That materially lowers the cost of testing the market
The honest counterpoint — and it is real. Non-EU businesses cannot simply sign up. You need a legal entity registered in the Netherlands or Belgium, or a fiscal representative — Bol does not accept sole traders from outside the EU. Dutch consumers expect very fast delivery, and Bol enforces genuinely strict service metrics. And Dutch-language customer service is an admission requirement, not a nice-to-have. Plan accordingly.
A registered business — a Dutch KVK (Kamer van Koophandel) number, or a Belgian Handelsregister/BCE registration
A Dutch or Belgian bank account (IBAN)
A BTW number — Dutch VAT
A valid identity document
An EAN/GTIN barcode for every product — mandatory. If you do not have them, you request them from GS1 Netherlands
Non-EU sellers: you must establish a legal entity in the Netherlands or Belgium, or work with a fiscal representative. Bol does not accept registrations from sole traders outside the EU. This is the single biggest structural barrier for international sellers, and it is worth understanding before you invest time.
Bol has opened to international sellers but applies clear criteria. Reported requirements include:
Willingness to integrate via a Bol-certified API partner — such as Channable or ChannelEngine
Proven experience with international marketplaces
A clear, customer-centric vision and way of working
The ability to provide Dutch-language customer service
That last one is not a soft preference. Bol requires sellers to respond to customer questions within 24 hours, in Dutch, and to be reachable by phone on working days between 09:00 and 17:00.
Deliver products within roughly 1–8 days
No more than 2% cancellations
Respond to customer questions within 24 hours (in Dutch)
A high on-time delivery rate — sources cite minimums around 93–98% — confirm your current target in your seller account
Track & trace on every shipment
Process cancellation requests within 24 hours
Process returns within 24 hours of receipt
Be reachable by phone, 09:00–17:00 on working days
Poor performance leads to warnings and, eventually, removal from the platform. This is not a marketplace where you can coast. No monthly subscription fee — a Bol seller account is free. You pay commission per sale, which varies by category. Bol pays sellers weekly by bank transfer. Logistics via bol (LvB) is Bol's equivalent of Amazon FBA — you ship stock to Bol's warehouse (in Waalwijk) and Bol handles storage, picking, packing, and delivery. LvB products qualify for Select, Bol's Prime-like fast-delivery programme.
Bol's white-background, no-shadow rule has an important, explicitly stated exception: atmosphere images — sfeerbeelden — showing articles in a specific setting.
This is where your model photography lives. Bol's own guidance and Dutch marketplace specialists both confirm that model shots — photos of models wearing your product — and lifestyle setting images are permitted and encouraged alongside the clean white main image.
Read that carefully, because it is the whole opportunity. Bol's main image is a clean, technical packshot. But the supporting slots — the sfeerbeelden — are where a fashion listing actually converts, and where most sellers simply upload nothing. Meanwhile Bol's per-item quality score rewards richer, more complete content with better visibility. A clean packshot gets you compliant. A sfeerbeeld with a model gets you chosen.
Zalando NL — Zalando operates in the Netherlands as part of its ~25-market European footprint, and it is the fashion-specialist platform in NL. Its image standards are the strictest in European fashion: white packshot, model images on plain light grey, mandatory front and back crops, and the model must be wearing shoes. Zalando requires a minimum of around 762 pixels on the shortest side. One Zalando partnership opens ~25 European markets
Wehkamp — a long-established Dutch fashion and home department store turned marketplace, with a broad, mainstream, family-oriented customer base and strong trust equity
Otrium — an Amsterdam-founded fashion outlet platform, dedicated to end-of-season and excess stock from brands. A genuinely valuable and under-discussed channel for clearing inventory without destroying your full-price positioning
Amazon.nl — present, but notably weaker in the Netherlands than in almost any other market it operates in. Do not build your Dutch strategy around it, but it can be a useful supplementary channel. Its image rules differ from Bol's — pure white RGB 255,255,255, 85% frame fill
Vinted NL — resale is mainstream in the Netherlands, and Vinted is the dominant secondhand fashion platform. Overwhelmingly on-model and authentic-photo driven
Marktplaats — the Dutch classifieds giant (eBay-owned) and a genuine cultural institution. Enormous for secondhand and individual sellers
de Bijenkorf — the Netherlands' premium department store, with a marketplace and correspondingly high brand and imagery standards. Strong for premium and designer positioning
Dutch-language customer service is one of Bol's stated admission criteria for international brands — not a suggestion. You must respond to customer questions within 24 hours, in Dutch, and be reachable by phone during working hours.
Product content must be in Dutch — titles (Bol has strict title formatting rules: brand, model/type, category, separated by hyphens), descriptions, specifications, and size charts. Machine-translated Dutch is easily spotted and undermines trust.
Note also: most Dutch people speak excellent English — but they shop in Dutch. Do not let the former lull you into skipping the latter.

Payments: iDEAL is the dominant Dutch online payment method by a wide margin — for your own webshop, offering iDEAL is essential. Achteraf betalen (pay-later, via Klarna, Riverty and similar) is also widely expected.
Bol's sfeerbeeld slots — explicitly permitting models and settings — sit empty on most listings, while Bol's per-item quality score rewards richer content with better visibility
Bol accepts video (min 720p) — another slot most sellers ignore
Zalando NL requires on-model photography — on light grey, with front and back crops, and shoes on the model
Vinted and Marktplaats — run on authentic, worn imagery
de Bijenkorf — demands premium presentation
Dutch buyers, like their German neighbours, return a lot of fashion — and accurate on-model imagery is the cheapest returns intervention available
A flat lay, hanger shot, or packshot works as the input. Bol's main image needs a white, shadow-free background — our white background guide and lighting guide cover the technique, and our flat lay guide covers the input.
Select an appearance and styling appropriate to your brand and your Dutch or Belgian buyer.
Photorealistic on-model imagery from your real garment, preserving its true colour, print, and texture — filling the Bol slots your competitors leave empty, meeting Zalando NL's on-model requirement, and giving Vinted and Marktplaats the worn shots they reward.
From the same product image, Studiofy produces 4-second, 6-second, and 8-second product videos. Bol accepts video at a minimum of 720p, and Instagram and TikTok drive Dutch fashion discovery.
White, shadow-free, 80% frame fill, 1:1 square, ≥1200 × 1200 px for zoom, 30 KB–10 MB for Bol's main image. Light grey portrait with shoes on the model for Zalando NL. Pure white for Amazon.nl. And above all — verify the image faithfully represents the actual garment.
An honest note on AI imagery compliance. No major marketplace, Dutch or otherwise, has issued a blanket ban on AI-generated imagery as of 2026. What every platform applies — equally to AI images and photographs — is its accuracy standard. Bol's own rule is instructive and worth internalising: show only the item and the accessories that come with it — only what the customer actually receives. That is precisely the standard AI imagery must meet. Verify current policy in your Bol seller account, and use AI exactly as Studiofy is designed to be used: to show your real product, accurately, on a model.
Dameskleding (Women's Fashion) — the largest opportunity. Jurken, blouses, truien, rokken, jassen
Herenkleding (Men's Fashion) — shirts, truien, jassen, spijkerbroeken, blazers
Schoenen en Sneakers (Footwear) — Zalando began as a shoe retailer and remains dominant
Tassen en Accessoires
Sportkleding en Athleisure
Duurzame Mode (Sustainable Fashion) — Dutch consumers are among Europe's most sustainability-conscious, and the country's cycling-and-circularity culture is genuine, not marketing
Grote Maten (Plus Size) — under-served relative to demand
Sieraden (Jewellery) — strong on Bol, Etsy NL, and de Bijenkorf
Kinderkleding (Kidswear) — a strong Wehkamp and Bol category
Outlet and end-of-season stock — Otrium exists precisely for this, and it is under-used by international brands
Building your Dutch strategy around Amazon — Bol dominates. Amazon.nl is the supplementary channel here, not the main one — a genuine inversion of the usual playbook.
Assuming you can just sign up from outside the EU — You need a Dutch or Belgian entity or a fiscal representative. Bol does not accept non-EU sole traders.
Leaving the sfeerbeeld slots empty — Bol explicitly permits model and lifestyle images alongside the white main image — and its quality score rewards richer content with better visibility. Most sellers upload the packshot and stop.
Ignoring Bol's video slot — Minimum 720p, and largely unused.
Underestimating the Dutch-language requirement — It is an admission criterion, with 24-hour Dutch-language responses and phone reachability 09:00–17:00. Most Dutch people speak English — but they shop, and complain, in Dutch.
Missing or wrong EAN codes — Mandatory on Bol. Request from GS1 Netherlands if you lack them.
Underestimating the service metrics — ≤2% cancellations, 24-hour returns processing, track & trace on everything. Poor performance means warnings, then removal.
Cross-posting Bol's square white images to Zalando NL — Zalando wants portrait, light grey model backgrounds, and shoes on the model. Build one master asset, export platform-specific variants.
Ignoring Otrium for overstock — It exists to solve exactly that problem, and it is under-used by international brands.
The Netherlands is the market where Amazon lost — and Bol won. Where a seller account costs nothing to open. Where the platform has only just opened its doors to international brands, and the room is not yet crowded.
And where, on listing after listing, the sfeerbeeld slot sits empty.
Bol tells you plainly that atmosphere images are permitted. It tells you plainly that models wearing your product are welcome. It gives you a video slot at 720p. It publishes a quality score that rewards you, in visibility, for filling all of it. Zalando NL demands on-model imagery outright. Vinted runs on it.
And most sellers upload one white packshot and stop.
Studiofy fills the rest — from that same single product photo. Upload your packshot, flat lay, or hanger shot. Choose your model. Generate photorealistic sfeerbeelden and on-model images — plus 4-, 6-, and 8-second video ads for Bol, Instagram and TikTok. Your real garment, its true colour and texture, on a photorealistic model.
No studio in Amsterdam. No model booking. No shoot.
Upload your product. Fill every slot. Win the quality score.
