Romania is the market with a structural quirk that rewrites the economics of product photography.
Cash on delivery (COD) — plată la livrare — is the dominant payment method in Romania, and it remains heavily used in Hungary and Bulgaria. In a COD transaction, the buyer does not pay until the package arrives at their door. And they can refuse it. When a Romanian buyer refuses a delivery, the seller pays the outbound shipping cost, the inbound return shipping cost, and earns nothing. That is a pure loss on every refusal — no revenue, two shipping fees.
For fashion specifically, where buyers routinely order multiple sizes or colourways to try at home, COD refusal rates are higher than in almost any other product category. And every single refusal is a negative P&L event.
This context matters for everything that follows — including how you photograph your products.
But there is also a remarkable simplification in Romania's marketplace structure. eMAG is Romania's dominant platform — the country's largest and most trusted online retailer. And in 2016, eMAG acquired Fashion Days, Romania's leading dedicated fashion marketplace. One seller registration, one product catalogue, two channels: the general marketplace and the fashion specialist, on the same platform infrastructure. A single eMAG account also gives you access to Hungary and Bulgaria through eMAG's Door2Door cross-border programme.
One registration. Three countries. Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria. The most structurally efficient multi-market entry in South-Eastern Europe.
The catch: eMAG requires a registered legal entity. SRL, PFA or II. No entity, no listing.
FEATURED SNIPPET
How do you sell fashion online in Romania?
Romania's fashion ecommerce centres on eMAG, the country's dominant marketplace, which also owns Fashion Days — meaning one seller registration gives access to both a general marketplace and Romania's leading fashion channel. eMAG requires a registered legal entity (SRL, PFA or II), charges category-based commission commonly cited at 7–15% with no monthly fee, and a single account provides access to Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria through its Door2Door programme. From July 2024, full invoicing capability is mandatory. The defining operational factor in Romania is cash on delivery (COD): the buyer does not pay until delivery, and a refused package means the seller pays outbound and return shipping with zero revenue. This makes product image accuracy — ensuring the item looks exactly as shown — a direct P&L variable. Other major Romanian fashion channels include Answear, Zalando RO, Modivo, Kaufland.ro and CEL.ro. There is no dedicated Amazon Romania marketplace. Product image accuracy and correct Romanian diacritics (ă, â, î, ș, ț) in listing content are non-negotiable. AI model photography tools like Studiofy — generating photorealistic on-model images and 4, 6 and 8-second video ads — help sellers meet eMAG's image standards while reducing the COD refusal risk that comes from misleading product presentation.
eMAG owns Fashion Days — One registration gives you the general marketplace and Romania's leading fashion specialist channel simultaneously. That bundle does not exist anywhere else in this series
One account, three countries — Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria via Door2Door cross-border. Three South-Eastern European markets from one eMAG seller account
No dedicated Amazon marketplace — Amazon does not operate a Romanian marketplace. Sellers who want European coverage via Amazon use Amazon.de, Amazon.fr or Amazon.it
A genuine fashion ecosystem — Answear, Zalando RO, Modivo, Kaufland.ro, CEL.ro and Vinted add significant additional reach
A growing ecommerce market — Romania is one of the fastest-growing ecommerce markets in the EU, starting from a lower base — meaning the growth opportunity is real
The honest counterpoint. SRL/PFA/II registration is a real barrier — no entity, no listing. COD refusal economics are a real risk — not theoretical. Shein and Temu apply standard price pressure. Correct Romanian diacritics in listings are non-negotiable. And eMAG's requirements around invoicing have tightened — full invoicing capability has been mandatory from July 2024.
Legal entity required — SRL (Societate cu Răspundere Limitată), PFA (Persoană Fizică Autorizată), or II (Întreprindere Individuală)
Registration is free — €0 per month account fee. You pay commission only when you sell
Commission is category-based — commonly cited at 7–15% (some sources cite 5–20%). Additional fees: 2% Partner Return Fund contribution, 0.5–1% quality assurance fee
Approval takes 2–7 working days
Mandatory from July 2024 — full invoicing capability (facturare integrală)
eMAG Genius — eMAG's loyalty programme — the Smart!/Prime equivalent. Qualifying matters for visibility and conversion
Fulfilment by eMAG (FBE) — warehouse and fulfilment service — Romania only. Door2Door handles Hungary and Bulgaria cross-border
Fashion Days — eMAG's fashion-specialist subsidiary, accessible through the same seller account
eMAG + Fashion Days: the bundle explained. eMAG acquired Fashion Days in 2016. Because they share platform infrastructure, a seller registered on eMAG's general marketplace can access Fashion Days as an additional channel through the same onboarding. Fashion Days is where Romania's fashion-conscious, brand-aware buyers shop — it is where you position your brand, not just your product. Register for eMAG. Show up on Fashion Days. One process, two surfaces.
This section does not appear in most international seller guides. It should, for Romania.
Buyer orders on COD — no payment upfront
Seller ships the package — pays outbound shipping cost
Buyer refuses at the door — "this is not what I expected"
Package returns to seller — pays inbound return shipping cost
Result — seller has paid two shipping fees and earned zero revenue
Now apply this to fashion — a category where Romanian buyers, like buyers across Europe, routinely order multiple sizes or colourways to try at home. If the product does not look like the image, if the colour is off, if the fabric looks different, the refusal rate climbs. Each refusal in fashion — a category with inherently higher refusal risk than books or electronics — is a guaranteed loss.
The product image accuracy connection. A misrepresentative image does not just risk a platform penalty in Romania. It risks a COD refusal — which means paying shipping both ways and earning nothing. An image that accurately represents your garment's real colour, real texture, and real fit reduces the expectation gap that drives refusals. This is why eMAG image accuracy matters more, financially, in Romania than it does in markets with pre-payment-dominant models. The photo is not just marketing. It is a delivery risk management tool.
For fashion categories specifically, eMAG and Fashion Days respond well to on-model imagery combined with white-background packshots. The on-model image drives the sale; the white-background image provides the clinical accuracy. Both together reduce the expectation gap — and in a COD market, reducing the expectation gap is reducing your delivery loss rate.
eMAG + Fashion Days — the dominant channel pair. Romania's most-visited online retailer plus its leading fashion-specialist subsidiary, on the same platform, through one registration
Answear.ro — a well-regarded CEE multibrand fashion platform. Young, style-conscious, brand-aware audience. Curated and editorially presented. Present in Romania as part of its regional operations
Zalando Romania — Zalando's Romanian presence brings the strictest image standards in European fashion: white packshot, model images on plain light grey, mandatory front and back crops. One partnership opens ~25 EU markets
Modivo Romania — premium fashion and footwear platform, present in Romania. Visually demanding, closely related to eobuwie
Kaufland.ro — Kaufland added a marketplace layer in 2022. Growing into fashion and lifestyle categories
CEL.ro — a longer-standing Romanian generalist marketplace with electronics at its core but fashion categories active
Vinted Romania — resale is mainstream. Authentic, worn-look photos perform well
OLX Romania — Romania's dominant classifieds platform, primarily C2C
No Amazon Romania — Amazon does not operate a dedicated Romanian marketplace. Use Amazon.de, Amazon.fr or Amazon.it for European reach
Listings must be in Romanian, and the diacritics matter. Romanian uses five characters that cannot be substituted: ă, â, î, ș, ț. Using s instead of ș or t instead of ț is immediately noticeable to every Romanian buyer and signals insufficient localisation. It also affects search — Romanian buyers search with diacritics, and incorrect characters reduce your discoverability.

COD economics make image accuracy a P&L issue — not just a compliance one. An image that misrepresents your garment's colour, texture, or fit increases COD refusal rates — every one of which costs you outbound and return shipping with zero revenue
eMAG and Fashion Days reward on-model imagery for fashion — packshot + model combination is the highest-converting format for apparel on both channels
Answear and Modivo are editorially presented, visually demanding channels
Zalando RO requires on-model photography to Europe's strictest specification
Vinted Romania runs on authentic, worn-look imagery
A flat lay, hanger shot, or plain white background shot works as the input. Our lighting guide, flat lay guide and white background guide cover the input side.
Select an appearance, pose and setting suited to your brand and your Romanian buyer.
Photorealistic on-model images from your real garment — preserving its actual colour, print and texture. In a COD market, image accuracy is a direct P&L variable: a misrepresented product that gets refused at the door costs you outbound and inbound shipping and earns zero revenue.
From the same product image, Studiofy produces 4-second, 6-second, and 8-second product videos for social and marketplace advertising.
White background with 3:4 aspect ratio for eMAG. Light grey portrait with shoes on the model for Zalando RO. Verify the image shows the actual colour and variant you are selling — the COD economics of Romania make this verification more financially critical than almost anywhere else in Europe.
An honest note on AI imagery and COD refusals. No major marketplace has issued a blanket ban on AI-generated imagery as of 2026. The standard they apply — including eMAG — is an accuracy standard: does the image represent what you are actually selling? An AI-generated on-model image of your real garment, in its real colour and its real variant, passes that standard. The specific reason this matters more in Romania than in almost any other market in this series: COD. If your AI-generated image invents a colour, a fit, or a quality that your actual garment does not have, and a Romanian buyer orders on COD and refuses at the door because the product does not match the image, you have paid two shipping fees and earned nothing. Image accuracy is not a marketing nicety here. It is a direct financial variable. Studiofy is built to place your real garment on a photorealistic model. That is the design principle — and in Romania, it is also the P&L principle.
Modă Feminină (Women's Fashion) — the largest opportunity. Rochii (including rochii de seară, rochii maxi), bluze, topuri, cămăși, hanorace, pulovere, cardigan-uri, sacouri, jachete, paltoane, jeanși, pantaloni, colanți, fuste, salopete, costume, lenjerie, pijamale
Modă Masculină (Men's Fashion) — tricouri, cămăși, polo, hanorace, pulovere, sacouri, jachete, paltoane, jeanși, pantaloni, costume, lenjerie
Modă Copii și Bebeluși — îmbrăcăminte bebeluși, body-uri, rochii copii, jachete copii
Încălțăminte (Footwear) — a strong Romanian category — strong Modivo/eobuwie presence
Bijuterii (Jewellery) — a consistently high-priority Romanian category
Genți și Accesorii
Îmbrăcăminte Sport / Activewear
Costum de Baie (Swimwear) — seasonal and on-model dependent
Modă Plus Size / Mărimi Mari — under-served and growing
Modă Sustenabilă (Sustainable Fashion) — an emerging Romanian purchase driver
Selling without a registered legal entity — eMAG requires SRL, PFA or II. No entity, no listing.
Ignoring COD refusal economics — Every refused COD package costs you two shipping fees and earns zero revenue. Product image accuracy is not optional — it is a P&L lever.
Misrepresenting colour or variant in product images — In a COD market, this is a guaranteed loss mechanism, not just a platform rule.
Missing diacritics in Romanian listings — ă, â, î, ș, ț are not decorative. Wrong characters reduce discoverability and signal inadequate localisation to every Romanian buyer.
Missing the eMAG + Fashion Days bundle — One registration reaches both. Not registering for Fashion Days when you sell apparel means leaving the fashion-specialist channel empty.
Assuming eMAG Fulfilment by eMAG covers Hungary and Bulgaria — FBE is Romania only. Hungary and Bulgaria are served by Door2Door cross-border shipping.
Expecting Amazon to be relevant — There is no dedicated Amazon Romania marketplace. eMAG is the platform to build around.
Uploading only white-background images for fashion — White-background packshots are necessary, but on-model imagery drives fashion conversions on eMAG and Fashion Days.
Using incorrect or missing invoicing setup — From July 2024, full invoicing capability is mandatory on eMAG.
No other market in this series has the structural simplicity of Romania. One eMAG registration. One product catalogue. Two channels — the general marketplace and the fashion specialist — because eMAG owns Fashion Days. Three countries — Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria — through Door2Door. An ecommerce footprint covering South-Eastern Europe, from a single account.
But Romania also has a rule that no other market makes this financially explicit: cash on delivery means the buyer decides whether to pay when the package arrives at their door. A misrepresentative product image is not just a listing violation here. It is a guaranteed double shipping loss with zero revenue. Every time.
Which means product image accuracy is not optional. It is the operating principle of Romanian fashion ecommerce.
Studiofy takes your real garment — its real colour, its real texture, its real fit — and places it on a photorealistic model. That is the design principle. In Romania, it is also the only sensible financial principle.
